Gate Fold Shutter Card

This card was made at the suggestion of my friend, Sandy Parker, host of the YouTube channel, Crafting for Almost Everyone. It was a very fun card to make and her instructions made it very easy.

First, go to Sandy’s video at https://www.youtube.com/embed/TXPa_78tn0Q

Working through this with her is easy and fun. I’m going to go ahead and give you the step-by-step instructions for those of you who like things in print.

Cut the lime green card stock base to 5 1/2″ tall by 8 1/2″ wide. Score at 2 1/8″ and 6 3/8″ (or for those with a Scor-it, score it inward 2 1/8″ from the left side and then score it inward 2 1/8″ from the right side).

Cut the white card stock, for the front panels to 5 1/4″ tall by 1 7/8″ wide. Sandy says to use designer series paper, but we’re actually going to stamp our paper. You’ll need 2 of these.

Cut the white card stock for the inside middle panel to 5 1/4′ tall by 2 3/4″ wide. In the video, Sandy refers to this part as designer series paper, but we’re going to stamp our own designer paper.

Cut 2 pieces of pink card stock (the inside shutters) to 3 1/4″ tall by 4″ wide, score at 1/2″ on the 4″ side (so the score line will be 3 1/4 tall). Find and mark the center of these pieces. With the score line running vertically, cut from the corner (NOT the scored end) to the center mark on the top and bottom. You are essentially making a flag shape. In the end you’ll have two shutters that are scored vertically and the other end will have a V removed from it.

Cut the pink card stock for the inside middle at 5 1/2″ tall by 3″ wide.

Apply lime green ink to a piece of scrap paper with a blending tool and stamp the, “You are Loved” sentiment.

Stamp the two front panels with the Retro Sundress Peg Stamp set, following the instructions included with the set. Glue these panels on each side of the “gate,” leaving an even border of lime green around each panel.

Stamp the inside middle panel with the, “Friend” and, “Always Remember” sentiment stamps, Peeled Flower in old rose, and Big Frizzle Flower in lime ink. Glue this onto the pink inside panel, leaving an even pink border all the way around. Punch a 2 1/2″ circle from this panel. Attach pieces of 3-D tape along the top and bottom of this center piece.

Open the card base. Lay the left shutter piece on the right side of the card base fold, centering it top to bottom. Place the right shutter piece of the left side of the card base fold, lining it up within the “gates” to create a square. Make sure the center of the shutter is closed, that you have no small opening of the shutter. Run a line of glue within the 1/2″ scored area of the left shutter piece. Close the left “gate” and press firmly to attach pink shutter to green card “gate.” Fold along the score line. Make sure everything continues to line up, then run a line of glue within the 1/2″ scored area on the right shutter piece, close the right “gate” and press firmly to attack the pink shutter to the green card base. Fold along the score line.

Glue your lime green scrap paper with the sentiment stamp on the lime green back of the card where the shutter hole will be.

Now, overlap the pointy parts of the shutter (like you do when shutting a cardboard box with out tape), each point of each shutter piece going over and under the other shutter piece. You can open and shut the card, fixing any glitches with the shutters.

Center the center section from right to left in the center of the card, remove the tape backing and adhere. Now simply wrap a length of ribbon around the card and tie in a bow. That’s it!

Now you can now experience the magic of this card, open it, it’s SO much fun!

I’m so happy to share this card with you and thankful for Sandy’s urging me to make one of these myself. Please be sure to watch Sandy’s video (subscribe, you won’t regret it) and give her a YouTube thumbs up!
